The Future of Lancaster: Eco-Innovation & Heritage

The Future of Lancaster: Eco-Innovation & Heritage

Lancaster, a city steeped in history, is looking towards a vibrant future, one that harmonizes its rich heritage with cutting-edge innovation. We're excited to announce an upcoming art exhibition that explores this very theme, inviting artists to delve into the heart of our city's evolution.

This April at The Storey:

This April, The Storey will once again become a focal point for artistic expression and community dialogue. In April, it will host our "The Future of Lancaster: Eco-Innovation & Heritage" exhibition. This event aims to showcase artwork that explores the intersection of Lancaster's historical roots and its journey towards a sustainable future. We invite you to join us in this celebration of creativity and forward-thinking, as we envision the possibilities that lie ahead for our beloved city.

The Building in Focus: The Storey's History

The Storey, located in Lancaster, has a rich history dating back to its establishment in the late 19th century. It was originally built as the Storey Institute, thanks to a generous donation from local philanthropist Thomas Storey. The institute was intended to provide educational and cultural opportunities for the people of Lancaster, housing a variety of facilities including an art school, library, and technical school. Over the years, The Storey has served as a vital hub for learning and community engagement, adapting to the changing needs of the city while retaining its historical significance.

A City in Transition:

Lancaster is a unique blend of the old and the new. From its iconic architecture, whispering tales of centuries past, to the initiatives focused on sustainable design and technology, the city is a living testament to progress. We believe that art has a crucial role to play in capturing this dynamic transition and envisioning the possibilities that lie ahead.

Exploring the Themes:

We've invited artists to draw inspiration from the following themes:

  • Heritage: The stories etched in our buildings, the traditions passed down through generations, the historical landmarks that define our identity.

  • Architecture: The structures that shape our urban landscape, from the grand to the intimate, and how they can be reimagined for a sustainable future.

  • Innovation: The forward-thinking ideas and technologies that can drive Lancaster towards a greener tomorrow.

  • Technology: The tools and advancements that are transforming how we live, work, and interact with our environment.

  • Sustainable Design: The principles and practices that are creating a more eco-conscious and resilient city.

  • Nature: The natural environment surrounding Lancaster and how we can integrate it into our urban planning and design for a more sustainable future. Explore concepts like green infrastructure, biodiversity, and the use of natural resources in innovative ways.

Capturing Lancaster's Essence:

Recently, a group of local photographers from Lancaster Photographic Society and CMC embarked on a journey to capture the essence of The Storey building, a landmark that embodies the intersection of heritage and innovation. This photoshoot, led by Ruth Lochrie, aimed to provide artists with visual references to inspire their submissions.
